5 Easy Ways To Incorporate Minimalism Into Your Life

Minimalism has always been an interesting concept to me because I used to (and still do sometimes) rely on objects to bring me joy.

When I started getting into living sustainably, I realized that its important to find happiness in other places, instead of in things.

No matter what your reason is for wanting to try out this lifestyle, these five ideas can make it easier to incorporate minimalism into your life.

Get Rid Of Things Strategically

Usually the first step of converting to a minimalist lifestyle is to get rid of things you already have in your home, that don’t serve a purpose.

This can be very difficult for some people, especially if you’re sentimental like me and have a hard time throwing things away.

The easiest way to go about this is to separate the process into different sections. Try going through these steps when cleaning out spaces in your home:

  1. Put everything you want to donate into boxes
  2. Throw out anything that can’t be donated or repurposed
  3. Pack up items you want to keep, but don’t have a place for yet

Throwing things away is something that’s very hard for me because I hate the idea of creating waste. However I’ve come to realize that there are some things that can’t be used anymore and all I can do is try to be less wasteful in the future.

If you have an attic or basement to keep extra items in, it can be a good idea to pack up items that are sentimental but don’t necessarily belong in your living space. While this is an option, its important to make sure that they’re things you really want to hold onto.

Give Everything A Place

One of the most common ideas in minimalism is that everything has a purpose and a place. Before I started making changes to live with less, this was definitely not the case in my home.

If you’re finding that your house gets messy very quickly after you clean, it might be because the things in your house don’t have a designated place to go back to. So you end up just relocating items until they become apart of the mess again.

It takes time to declutter initially and find a space for everything, but once you do you’ll spend a lot less time cleaning (and looking for things you misplaced in the mess).

Keep Track Of What You Buy

This concept may sound kind of weird but when I say to keep track of things I don’t mean that you have to make a spreadsheet or write every single thing down, just be aware of what you’re buying.

Keeping track of things can prevent you from having duplicate items or bringing too many things into your home.

You might find it helpful to create a system for yourself like only buying 3 new items a month or limiting the amount of times you go out to shop.

Be Conscious When You Buy

Instead of buying something just because you want to, try asking yourself these questions before making the purchase:

  • Do I have something similar to this already?
  • Is there a place in my home for this?
  • Will this serve a purpose in my house?
  • How long will I use this for?

This way you can figure out if its actually worth buying, and prevent yourself from buying things that you don’t need.

Create Your Own Definition Of Minimalism

There isn’t one right way to live a minimalist lifestyle and everyone can define it differently.

Some people believe that minimalism means you should only have necessities, while others continue to buy things they want as long they have a purpose or meaning. I choose to live by the latter.

If I find something that brings me joy I’m likely to get it, as long as I know I have a place for it.

Trying to live by a minimalist lifestyle that you know you can’t sustain can cause you to give up on the way of life completely.

There are several resources that can tell you how to live minimally, but ultimately its up to you to choose how you want to incorporate it into your life.

I hope this gave you some ideas on how you can incorporate minimalism into your life. It might be difficult to get used to, but overtime it will help you appreciate what you have more and keep your home free from clutter. Thanks for reading, have a lovely day!
