Having a hobby can help you destress and express yourself creatively, especially if your job doesn’t allow you to do that.
While there are some activities that use a lot of materials, these low-waste hobbies are inexpensive and you don’t need to have any special talents to do them!
Photography
Personally I’m not very good at photography but a lot of my friends love it, and have even made money from it by taking pictures for friends and family.
If you’re just starting out you can find free tutorials online from youtube or pinterest.
Electronic waste is becoming increasing problematic, because people often don’t dispose of it properly and its easy to accumulate overtime.
However you don’t have to buy a new camera to start photography, you could buy a preowned one or even use your phone.

Gardening
Planting a whole garden can be intimidating, but there are several hardy plants to start with that you can keep up with even if you don’t have a green thumb.
You could also start with some houseplants if you aren’t able to have a garden where you live
Cooking And Baking
Even though cooking has the potential to create a lot of waste, there are easy ways to prevent this when grocery shopping. If you need cooking utensils you can check out thrift stores or ask to borrow from neighbors.
You can even find recipes online that use parts of food that tend to go to waste. Try one of these healthy no-waste recipes the next time you’re cooking!
Blogging
Blogging is a great way to share your ideas with people, its also free and zero-waste! Its easy to get started with any free blogging platform and you can write about anything you want.
Upcycling
When you think of upcycling, clothes are probably the first thing to come to mind but there are endless options for upcycling. This is a great way to have fun while also giving old items a new purpose.
There are many places to find items for your projects but my favorites are thrift shops, garage sales, or asking your friends and neighbors.
Yoga
Yoga increases your mental and physical health, and you don’t need to be super fit to get started. You can take yoga classes at a studio or practice at home, using youtube videos to guide you.

Hiking
Hiking is a fun way to exercise and get out into nature, you can go to nearby trails or if you’re able, state and national parks.
No matter where you’re going to hike, its a sustainable way to be active and you could also pick up some trash along the way. If you’re looking for eco-friendly activewear you can find my article on that here.
Volunteering
Volunteering gives back to your community and makes you feel good about helping people! Volunteer opportunities will vary by location, but some common places are animal shelters, food pantries, and retirement homes.
Journaling
Journaling is a relaxing way to get your express your thoughts and be creative! You can write about anything but some ideas are:
- Writing out your goals
- Keeping a gratitude journal
- Tracking your daily habits and routines
If you need sustainable journals or writing tools, you can check out my article on that here.
Learn A New Language
Learning a second language can help improve your memory and even expand your vocabulary in your first language. There are several free resources online like Duolingo, or you could find language books at second-hand shops.
I hope this gave you some ideas of eco-friendly hobbies that give you an outlet to destress, and help you learn new things about yourself! Thanks for reading, have a lovely day!
Nice tips! Keep up the great writing!
