Cleaning products are one of the most common household items, but many people don’t realize how significant of an impact they can have on the environment.
When you consider how traditional cleaning products contribute to plastic waste and exposure to harsh chemicals, it seems ridiculous that most of these sustainable brands were only created in the last few years.
While some of these items may initially be more expensive than your average cleaner, investing in reusable containers will save you money overtime; and help you reduce the amount of single-use plastic in your home.

What Should You Look For In An Eco-Friendly Cleaner?
While “eco-friendly” can mean many different things, some qualities I like to look for when choosing cleaning products are:
- Non-toxic Ingredients
- Reusable/Refillable Containers
- Plastic Free
- Cruelty Free
Even if you switch to cleaning products that fall into only one of these categories, you’ll still be benefitting the environment compared to using conventional cleaners.
Product Type: Refillable containers, dishwasher pods, hand soap, laundry tablets, and spray cleaners
What Makes Them Sustainable: Blueland’s reusable containers help eliminate plastic waste from single-use cleaners and their refill tablets are packaged in biodegradable and compostable wrappers.
Their products are also formulated without any of the harsh chemicals that you would find in most common cleaners, and they’re cruelty free + vegan!
Price Range: Starter kits begin at $29 and refills are $2 or less (if you buy in bulk)
Product Type: Refillable containers, all-purpose cleaner, laundry detergent, liquid dish soap, dishwasher tablets, bar soap, and wool dryer balls
What Makes Them Sustainable: Clean Cult is similar to Blueland, as they also make reusable containers for cleaning solutions.
Their products are also cruelty-free, palm oil free, and all of the product packaging is either water soluble or recyclable.
Price Range: Bundles begin at $35 and refills are between $7-$10
Product Type: Hand soap, multi-surface cleaner, laundry detergent, and dish soap
What Makes Them Sustainable: Unlike Clean Cult and Blueland, Common Good has refill stations that you can go to and fill your reusable containers.
This eliminates carbon emissions and waste from ordering through the mail, however the refill stations are not yet available in every city.
Common Good’s products are also 100% biodegradable and free from harsh chemicals. While some products use palm oil-derived ingredients, they’re sustainable sourced and all cleaners are cruelty-free
Price Range: Kitchen and home sets start at $54 and refills for most products are $18 for 34 oz packages
Product Type: Laundry detergent pods, fabric softener pods, oxi booster pods, and dryer balls
What Makes Them Sustainable: Unlike big brand laundry pods (which use the same water soluble film) Dropps ingredients are primarily plant and mineral derived, which is much safer for the environment.
Their products are also shipped in recyclable/compostable packaging, that’s made with 50% post-consumer recycled material.
Price Range: 56 detergent pods for $24, or $17 if you subscribe for recurring orders
I hope you’ll choose to try out one of these brands, and if you have already please feel free to comment which one you recommend. Thank you for reading, have a lovely day!
These brands sound really good, I wonder if I can get them in the UK! 🙂

I believe these brands only ship to the U.S. at the moment 😦 I’ll have to do an article on UK brands in the future!

I have been on a sustainable product mission this year (it’s one of my new years resolutions). I have found that I really like this lint brush because all lint brushes suck and this one doesn’t come with the awful sheets https://bedenovo.com/ . And this is not related to cleaning, but I LOVE these bees wax wraps https://www.beeswrap.com/ (they are soooooo good at keeping half your avocado from turning brown 🙂
