Although Valentine’s Day in itself is not very sustainable, (being that it centers around the commodification of love) I still think it can be fun to celebrate as long as you shift the focus to what its really about- showing the people you love that you appreciate them!
Whether you spend it with your significant other, or just with some friends, these are a few low-waste and inexpensive ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day in an eco-friendly way.
Have An At Home Spa Day
While you could always go to a real spa, its easier to control the waste you create when you’re at home and you’ll probably have more fun that way too!
You can find lots of DIY recipes for bath products online, or if you want to make it part of your gift you could get your significant other a sustainable spa gift box, like these ones from Lush.
Go To An Art Museum
Some people think museums are boring, but personally I love them. They’re usually inexpensive (and romantic) making it the perfect activity for any couple.
While you can always go to one of the popular museums in your area, keep an eye out for pop-up art installations which are a great way to support local artists in your community.
Volunteer
If both you and your partner enjoy giving back to the community, volunteering can be a great way to celebrate Valentine’s Day together.
Whether its at the animal shelter, your local soup kitchen, or even just picking up trash in your neighborhood, you’ll both feel good knowing you spent the day helping others.
Hike & Bring A Picnic
For the outdoorsy couples, going on a hike together is a great way to spend time together. And what’s more eco-friendly than enjoying and appreciating nature?
If you wanted to make a day out of it you could also pack food to have a picnic during your hike.
Cook A Meal Together
Instead of spending a lot of money to go out for a fancy dinner, you can make a meal together at home or cook dinner for your partner. And to make your day even more sustainable, remember to shop locally and maybe try out a recipe with fewer animal products.
Hopefully this gave you some ideas on how you can celebrate Valentine’s Day in a more sustainable way. Thank you for reading, have a lovely day!
Thanks for the ideas 😀 I feel like I’m a bit more prepared than usual now and less of a mad panic to think of something nice for my wife.
