In a previous post I mentioned that vinegar was an eco-friendly alternative to common household cleaners, that can contain harmful chemicals and create plastic waste.
While there are countless ways to use vinegar for household cleaning, these are the five ways that I use it in my home!
What Kind Of Vinegar Should You Use?
White distilled vinegar is the best to use for cleaning because it doesn’t have any colorants that may stain surfaces.
Its also important to make sure that the vinegar you’re using is sourced from plants because some vinegar is made with petroleum, which obviously makes it a less sustainable option.
All Purpose Cleaner
I use this all purpose solution to clean mirrors, countertops, and showers and its super simple to make. Just mix 50/50 water and vinegar and put it into a spray bottle.
I like to add a few drops lavender essential oil to mine so the vinegar scent isn’t as strong, but you don’t have to. To use it just spray some on the surface, let it sit for a few seconds, and wipe it with a paper towel or reusable cloth.
Shower Head
If you’ve ever noticed that the water pressure in your shower isn’t as strong as it was before, its probably because of calcium or mineral deposits that can build up on your shower head overtime.
A simple solution to this is to put some vinegar in a bag and use a rubber band to secure it around your shower head. Let it sit for an hour or two and the mineral deposits should have been completely dissolved by the vinegar.
If there is remaining build up, you can take an old toothbrush and gently scrub the shower head until its completely clean.
Microwave
Vinegar can make it much easier to clean food residue off of microwave walls. Just put one cup of water and a couple spoons of vinegar into a microwave safe container and microwave until steam forms in the microwave.
After letting the steam settle for a few minutes, wipe down the walls of the microwave. The food residue should come off easily and it will also get rid of any odor.
Toilet Bowl
To clean your toilet using vinegar simply pour 1/2 cup into the toilet bowl, let it sit for 5-10 minutes, and flush.
If you’re trying to get rid of hard water stains, let the vinegar sit for half an hour and lightly scrub the stains. This is a gentle alternative to cleaners containing harsh chemicals.
Dishwasher
Vinegar can also help get rid of odor and residue in your dishwasher. All you have to do is put one cup of it in a dishwasher safe container and run the dishwasher with just the container of vinegar in it.
The vinegar will rinse out left over residue from your dishes and also eliminate any odor that it may have.
If you’re ever unsure about using vinegar as a cleaning product you can use one of the other sustainable cleaning products mentioned in my previous article, 6 eco-friendly cleaning products. Thanks for reading, have a lovely day!
